You know the growing trend of photo search in the eCommerce industry. But you are still not driving the sales right.

The Photo Search Dilemma

Why?

Well, maybe because your photo search optimization is not yet well boosted. As a result, your site may be not that visible on visual searches.

There is a lot of factors to consider in boosting your site for photo search.

  • Site load times
  • Image quality & photography
  • Image settings and attributes
  • Other SEO factors

Have you tried all the possible options of optimization? Do you know the difference between file types? How can you enable your images to appear visible on visual searches?

Photo search optimization may sound tricky. Since this concerns more of the technical aspects. But you need not worry that much.

In this post, we are listing photo optimization best practices for eCommerce sites.

Best Practices For Photo Search Optimization

Consider this list of best practices for boosting your eCommerce’s visual search capabilities.

1. Name your images right

Upon taking your shots on a camera, the camera should give you a default file name together with the picture.

However, when you are using such images for eCommerce, file names matter. So make sure to rename the image file with relevant keywords.

Perhaps start with a “descriptive, keyword-rich” filename. Because this is how you are helping search engines to find you.

Moreover, you can also adjust file names through naming patterns that your customers commonly use. You can try to look at your website analytics. It can let you see your customer’s keyword patterns, for instance. Then adapt accordingly.

2. Be careful with the image’s alt attributes

What are image alt attributes?

These refer to the text alternatives of an image. So in case, the search engine cannot properly analyze the image, your text alternatives can render it on your image’s behalf.

Moreover, it can better your SEO ranking. So make sure to provide appropriate alt attributes. For example, provide the right keywords according to your image. This way, you rank better on search engines.

3. Reduce & optimize the file size

File size can affect your page load times. If your eCommerce site loads slow, it is easy for your customers to click “back” and turn to other faster-loading sites.

Is this even true?

Consider what Amazon reports. If their pages were slow to load even by a second, they will lose about $1.6 billion per year.

On the other hand, Google uses the page load time as a ranking factor for their algorithm. This is why it can greatly affect your visual search ranking.

4. Have the right angles and image dimensions

Provide multiple photos per product. Because this way you can also provide multiple keywords per image. So make sure to capitalize on these extra photos through its alt attributes.

This way, you are letting search engines reward you with more visibility on searches.

5. Know the difference between file types and choose the best one

There are three common file types. Namely, JPEG, GIF, and PNG.

Each type has its unique factor. But in most eCommerce cases, JPEG wins. Since it can provide the best quality in the smallest size.
