Visual search is growing to be an important part of eCommerce. That is why there are now a lot of visual search strategies.

If you have an eCommerce store, you need to follow these strategies. So, keep on reading to know more.

Visual Search Strategies for eCommerce Stores

File Names

First off, avoid using generic file names. Do not name your files as just “IMG_10152005” or something similar.

You need to save your file that describes the image. For example, if you are trying to sell a shirt and your model is wearing one, try describing it.

You can save and upload it as “man-wearing-navy-blueshirt.jpg” so it is easy to find your site.

Alt Text

Alternative text, alt text, alt tags, alt description. These are some of the names to call this. What is it?

It is the alternative text that flashes on the loading screen. Or when it fails to load. Also, search engines look for this to help them know what is in an image.

Further, people that use screen readers need this to know what is on their screen. So, add alt tags that are relevant to your image.

Image Sitemap

Image sitemap is where search engines get metadata about the image on your site. Thus, raising your chance of getting found.

Also, it is more effective if you have images loaded through Javascript. So, it is easier for your image to get known, crawled, and indexed.

Structured Data

If you want to be on top of visual search results, you need to give them as much information as you can. So, use structured data for your images.

Bu using this, your site can appear in rich snippets. Thus, more people can find your site.

Image Type, Size, and Quality

You need to take note that you cannot use just about any image you like. You also need to consider its type, size, and quality.

Why is this important? Because it can affect how your site loads. And the slower it loads, the higher the chance customers will leave.

So, the best file types to use are:

  • PNG
  • JPEG
  • GIF
  • BMP
  • WebP
  • SVG

Then, make sure you have the right file size. The bigger it is, the longer it loads. The lower it gets, the lower the quality.

So, it is best not to ignore both. Edit your image to lower the size while not losing quality.

Image Variety

Many eCommerce stores often overlook this. But most of the time, this is the cause of frustration for online shoppers.

So, upload photos of your product from different angles. If you are selling a bag, you can upload a picture in front, back, and side views.

Also, do not forget about including a picture of the inside. Many shoppers want to if it is large enough or if there is a dedicated laptop sleeve or whatnot.
