The Start of the Visual Search Revolution

Ofer FrymanOfer Fryman | August 22, 2017

2017 is turning out to be the year of visual search revolution, and if you take a moment to really think about it, it’s long overdue. This is especially the case for ecommerce.

Have you noticed the visual search revolution on social platforms? Sites such as Instagram and Pinterest are reigning supreme for brands across most industries, with the latter having launched a visual discovery tool, it has been proven to be a hit amongst users. With consistent activity on those platforms, brands notice a large increase in visits to their own websites, largely due to the “self discovery” element that gets activated in people who identify as visual learners.

In terms of eCommerce, visual search creates a more natural online shopping experience for users, especially when you compare banner ads and the like with native product discovery features with shoppable images. The Erdbeerlounge website is a great example of a fashion website that offers a delightful user experience with shoppable images.

Ebay and Amazon caught onto the visual search trend, and decided to jump on the bandwagon. Ebay is introducing image search capabilities that combine artificial intelligence, and machine learning technologies to improve results and give them an edge over their competitors. Amazon launched Spark, which at first glance looks very much like an Instagram feed. Unlike Instagram, the images are readily shoppable, and the goal is to take users back to Amazon for purchases. This is truly the visual search revolution.

The battlefield will surely be an interesting one between the two eCommerce giants as they delve into the world of visual search.
